How To Use A Sun Self Tanning Lotion

By Haywood Hunter

The sunless tanning products were created with the goal of obtaining the same result, but avoiding the exposure to the sun. A sun self tanning lotion can help a person or persons to obtain the same effect, in a shorter time than that needed with sun exposure. At the same studies are showing that this is a healthier alternative to sun exposure, as it will not require an exposure to UVB and UVA rays.

Today there are many products available on the market. The first sun self tanning lotion from this category was launched in 1960 by the company Coppertone, under the name of QT. But since that moment the products from this category have increased as availability and quality. Therefore nowadays the manufacturers are producing pills, bronzers and self tanners. Most of these products are producing effects immediately or in maximum two, three hours.

As sustained by the American Academy of Dermatology, the sun self tanning lotion that can offer the highest efficiency are the lotions containing dihydroxyacetone (DHA). This substance is nothing else than a sugar with no color, that in contact with the dead cells of the skin, produces a coloring effect. But taking into consideration the fact that daily millions of dead cells are sloughed off our skin, a permanent result can be assured only if the cream is applied often.

There is a large availability of products containing DHA. No matter if gel, cream or spray, products with DHA are created to have the same effect. An accelerator of the sun self tanning lotion process is the tyrosine, and this can be found in some products created especially with this purpose. Accelerators usually contain tyrosine, which stimulates and increase the melanin formation.

The most popular sun self tanning lotion is the bronzer. This works by moisturizing and powdering the skin at the same time. The big advantage is that after applied, the tan obtained can be easily removed with water. Very similar to a make-up product, the bronzer will tint the skin until this will be washed off.

It is recommended to exfoliate the skin before applying the self tanning cream, in order to assure that the product is spread evenly. Moisturizing the skin before can also help to have a uniform tan all over the body. A steamy bathroom should be avoided when applying the lotion, as the product can melt, leaving streaks on the skin.

Self tanning lotions can take more time to dry than the foam; if extra time is needed the lotion should be used. The application should be made with attention, in order not to leave uncovered areas, or darker spots. If the tanner is mixed with a moisturizer, the result can be more natural.

It is very important to know that a sun self tanning lotion will not protect the skin from the sun rays. A good protection can be obtained only using a sunscreen. A middle solution might be to mix the tanning product with a sunscreen lotion, even if the protection will not be the maximum.
